Assessment
Psychological assessments can answer a range of developmental questions.
Is my child delayed in their development?
What can help my child learn to their full potential?
Does this behaviour mean my child has a neurodevelopmental condition?
Why is a student having difficulty learning or coping at school?
Is my child going through a phase or should I be concerned?
Is my child’s difficulty making or keeping friends due to Autism?
Can ADHD explain why I am struggling to stay focused?
What kind of interventions and supports can help given a child’s unique set of strengths, skills and areas of need?
Assessments are offered for ages 4 - 22.
Each assessment starts with an initial meeting to better understand your questions and concerns.
The assessment is then individualized to answer those questions and make the most up-to-date recommendations. The type of assessment and the time required depends on the concerns but will always include:
A review of past documents and early history
Clinical interview with and questionnaires completed by the client, their parents or another highly familiar person
Direct assessment with the client
A feedback meeting to review results and recommendations
The results from each assessment are also shared with you in a written report with recommendations to support you or your child’s needs.
Assessment Process
Psycho-Educational Assessment
A Psycho-Educational Assessment helps answer questions like:
Why is my child having difficulty learning? Are they underachieving at school?
Does my child have any learning differences, such as Dyslexia, a Specific Learning Disorder, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), an Intellectual Disability or Giftedness?
Does my child have executive functioning difficulties?
What supports should be included in my child’s Individual Education Plan?
What social or emotional factors are contributing to my child’s experience at school?
My teen was assessed in the past, but needs a re-assessment. What can help their transition to adulthood or to post-secondary school?
Assessment of Autism
Autism assessments rely on gold standard assessment tools consistent with the Standards and Guidelines for Assessment and Diagnosis of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in British Columbia. They help answer:
Does my child or youth have an Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Can an Autism Spectrum Disorder help explain my history of challenges?
What supports can help me, my child or youth going forward?
Assessment of ADHD
If you are specifically wondering whether your own or your child’s difficulties staying focused, organized, and controlling impulsive behaviour may be due to an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: this question can be assessed through a broader Psychoeducational Assessment, but can also be the focus of a briefer, more targeted assessment.
Mental health assessments can help answer:
Is my child going through a phase or should I be concerned about their behaviour?
Is my child experiencing a mental health problem, such as Depression, an Anxiety Disorder, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?
Can my child benefit from therapy?
Where should I start to help my child with their mood, anxiety or behaviour?
